Last night I got to go to my first authors and illustrators night at Children’s Book World. This is an annual event (20 years running) for local kidlit folks that’s a meet-and-greet for an hour and then it’s open to the public. First of all, it’s amazing how many great authors and illustrators live in this area. You don’t even realize it until you’re in a room with all of them. Second of all, it’s so unbelievable to be in that room with all of them and actually wearing a nametag, like you’re legit.
When I wasn’t gazing out in awe*, I caught up with some lovely familiar faces: Kate Walton, Beth Kephart, Tiffany Schmidt, Brian Biggs and Josh Berk. I got to meet a few new people: Amy Ignatow, Kami Kinard, Jennifer Hubbard, Libby Mosier, Matt Phelan and A.S. King (even though Please Ignore Vera Dietz is my favorite book of the last couple of years I tried not to go too fangirl).
So many people I talked to said they make a point to come to this event every year. Going for the first time felt like a rite of passage or a debutante ball. Can’t wait for the next one!
*My apologies that I have no photos. I should’ve taken some, but I was a little too caught up in the awesomeness.
